Barrie has now taken the reigns of his own blog, BaztheSnap this site will stay active for reasons of archive.

This site has been set up for all the friends, family and well-wishers who would like to be updated with Barrie’s daily progress, whilst in hospital in France, after his terrible motorcycle accident.

The accident happened at around 2.55pm on Tuesday, 15 July 2008, whilst Barrie was passing through Le Mans on his way to his house in the South West of France.  He was riding on a completely straight D road between Le Mans and La Fleche.  On his side of the road there was a single lane, whereas the opposite side had two lanes, a slow and overtaking lane.  An elderly lady of 74 years of age was travelling in the opposite direction to Barrie in a Renault Megane.  For no apparent reason, her car swerved from the inside slow lane across her overtaking lane and onto the wrong side of the road and head on into poor Barrie on his motorcycle.
There were eight witnesses who saw the whole incident and who happened to be British.  These witnesses were returning from a Classic Car meeting which had been held in Le Mans and comprised of a group of four replica AC Cobras, with two passengers in each.  These cars were closely following the Renault Megane and having since spoken to these witnesses, they have explained that they couldn’t believe what they were seeing.  They could not understand why the car in front of them was slowing down, with no brake lights illuminating.  Then, all of a sudden for no apparent reason, the car swerved across two lanes directly into Barrie’s oncoming path.
It would appear that the lady had either fainted or become unconscious, or she had fallen asleep at the wheel.  According to the witnesses, Barrie did his best to avoid the inevitable and was described to have been braking very heavily whilst simultaneously trying to avoid the car.

He had probably reduced his speed to as little as 30mph at the point of impact.  It is for this reason that Barrie has survived the head-on collision.

Barrie, upon impact, was thrown from his motorcycle, hit the top of the passenger side of the windscreen, somersaulted over the roof and landed on his back on the opposite side of the road.  Fortunately, one of the eye-witnesses was a motorcycle race marshall who, being the first person at the scene, dealt with the roadside incident in a manner that could well have saved Barrie’s life.  Barrie was conscious at the scene and even removed his own crash helmet, however he was in tremendous pain and was complaining particularly about the pain his abdominal area.  As you can imagine, Barrie suffered multiple injuries which were so awful and exceptional that we have chose to not list them here.

The emergency services arrived on the scene quickly and Barrie was rushed to the hospital in Le Mans.  Here, Barrie underwent emergency surgery to try to stop the heavy, life-threatening, internal bleeding and his pelvis and leg were also urgently operated upon.  The surgeons in Le Mans managed to reduce the internal bleeding but weren’t able to actually stop it.  Barrie therefore had to be quickly transferred to the specialist unit at the university hospital in Tours to try to completely stop the haemorrhaging.  Fortunately, the surgeons in Tours were able operate successfully and managed to  stop the bleeding.  Barrie Has now been transfered by helicopter to paris to Hopital de la Croix Saint Simon in Paris 20.
